Doctor of Philosophy in Indo-European Studies

UCLA

Los Angeles, CA

The UCLA Program in Indo-European Studies is technically (in UCLA terminology) an “Interdisciplinary Program” (IDP), since some of its faculty and courses are shared with various UCLA departments, such as Classics, Linguistics, and Asian Languages and Cultures. The Program is the only one in the US that offers graduate degrees in Indo-European, an academic model that is not uncommon in Europe.

For students interested in exploring Indo-European, but who are not inclined or not yet ready to commit to doctoral studies in the field, the Program offers a terminal (“stand-alone”) M.A. degree. For detailed information, see the link at right to the Program Requirements for the M.A. degree, noting that some of the requirements refer specifically to the terminal M.A. degree.

Students who wish to earn a Ph.D. in Indo-European Studies (see the link at right to the Program Requirements for the Ph.D. degree for detailed information) have the opportunity to earn an M.A. degree on the way to the Ph.D. See the link just mentioned to the M.A. Program Requirements, noting that some of the requirements refer specifically to the “way-station” version of the M.A. degree, for students admitted to the Ph.D. program.
